Here the balance between the musical claim and the demands on a piano technique also amateurs are able to master was abundantly successful – playing enjoyment is guaranteed!

Piano News 5/2006

                                      PAUL BADURA-SKODA

Michael Publig hit the jackpot in this charming and instructive work!

With unfailing sense of style, pianistic accuracy

and a good sense of humor he makes most of the unusual and slightly brittle theme.

3. Jazz up! Paganini

«Jazz Up! Paganini» is a virtuoso concert piece specifically written for classical players.

We are about to hear some excerpts of the 6-minute piece to give you some ideas

about Jazz variations on a famous classical theme (Niccolò Paganini’s 24th Capriccio for solo violin).

The inspiration for writing it came from a virtuoso and spirited pianist:

she requested an encore that was supposed to sound like an improvisation for a performance of

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody for piano and orchestra.

I think that this idea is a wonderful opportunity for classical pianists to get acquainted with the world of jazz.

«Jazz Up! Paganini» is a Jazz Piano Suite with variations in the style of famous jazz pianists.

As it turns out, the composition is a virtuosic tour de force through the history

of jazz piano playing in six minutes.

The styles and their protagonists are (in order of appearance in the piece):

Rehearsal letter A: Chick Corea; B: Modern Jazz; C: Michel Camilo;

E: Makoto Ozone (a pianist unfortunately way too little-known);

F: Tango Nuevo (with Pablo Ziegler in mind);

G & H: Brazilian Choro Waltz (also a reflection of Rachmaninoff’s famous 18th variation);

J: Bossa Nova (with Clare Fischer’s harmonies);

K & L: Oscar Peterson; M: Art Tatum.

The whole piece is published at doblinger (order no. 01 442)

and comes along with a mp3 of the complete performance

plus additional improvisation tips.

time in - time out

Jazz Chamber Music for Piano Trio

The two parts of the title clarify a symbiosis of tonal languages: “time in_time out”, an energetic piano trio, contains contemporary elements before a clearly discernible modern jazz background. One could also call it a “chamber jazz trio”.

“Time” is the most important element of jazz phrasing. To play “in time” is not just playing “in rhythm”, the correct phrasing, the “timing” is essential for the “groove”.

The idea of a symbiosis of tonal languages is not new. For me, successful attempts of joining together the worlds of jazz and chamber music are the works of Chick Corea, Clare Fischer and Billy Childs. It in context with this tradition (that includes the “classical” composers Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Bernstein and Previn) that “time in_time out” must be seen.
